In July 2005 Motorola launched the first of its new ATEX intrinsically safe radios for use in hazardous, potentially explosive environments.
The roll-out began with the GP340 Ex, GP380 Ex (5-Tone) and GP680 Ex (MPT1327) ATEX radios in the UHF frequency range, along with lightweight and heavy-duty headsets.
These radios meet the highest level of ATEX gas protection as well as achieving ATEX dust protection. Since August 2006 the radios are also approved for use in mining applications, Category M2, where the equipment is intended for use in underground parts of mines as well as surface installation of such mines likely to be endangered by firedamp and/or combustible dust.

ATEX, the European Union directive to which all two-way radios must adhere if used in potentially explosive environments, was introduced in 2003. It replaced the FM (Factory Mutual) and Cenelec classifications in all European Union member states and EFTA countries.
